The Diagnostic Ultrasound

I was able to get an in-depth ultrasound appointment scheduled a week following my initial midwife appointment.  It was a rough week of crying, praying, and wondering what, if anything was wrong with my baby girl and if she would be OK.

We drove up to Long Beach because the center there had the earliest appointment available.  Sitting in the waiting room, waiting to be called back was nerve racking.  Finally the ultrasound tech took us back to one of the rooms.  It was so cold and I was nervous, and wondered what we would find out.  I remember the ultrasound tech was friendly enough and very surprised at hearing this was baby #11 for us.  I prayed as I laid on the table, hoping everything would check out OK and that our baby girl would be fine. The ultrasound tech had a hard time getting all the angles of the baby's heart but said she didn't see any holes or causes for concern there.  She then left the room and we waited for the doctor to come in and give us the results.

The doctor came into the room and was able to get a better picture of the baby's heart.  That's when she found the VSD (ventricular septal defect) in Imelda's heart.  She also mentioned her strawberry shaped head, clenched fists, and the cysts in her brain.  She said that it was very likely that Imelda had Trisomy 18, also known as Edward's Syndrome.  The doctor let us know about more in depth testing we could have done to confirm the diagnosis.  She also mentioned that termination was an option- more than once.  We finally, firmly let her know that termination was definitely NOT an option for us.  There was no way we were going to kill our baby girl.  She was a gift from God and He alone would get to decide when to take her home.

After the appointment, we were scheduled to meet up with a priest friend for lunch.  We entered the church and I just burst into tears.  One of the priests prayed with us and blessed us with a relic of Blessed Imelda who we had chosen to be our daughter's patron saint.  He sent us home with a framed photo collage of a little boy, Gerard Joseph who also had Trisomy 18, and who he had the honor of baptizing.  Little Gerard lived for two years.  I prayed to him often during the course of my pregnancy.

The Backstory

I am starting this blog to keep family and friends up to date on our daughter, Imelda.  Imelda was born on October 30th via emergency c-section.  She has a diagnosis of Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards Syndrome.  Originally we thought she would only be with us for a short time but it seems God has other plans for her life!  Thanks be to God she has been with us for almost three months and is thriving!  We are praying for God's guidance as we care for her and we are learning a lot along the way - just taking it one day at a time.

Continued Maternal Care

Because of Imelda's diagnosis, the midwives I was seeing dropped me pretty quickly.  They didn't give us any guidance of where to go next.  It was a scary couple of weeks, processing the daunting Trisomy 18 diagnosis and looking for a doctor who would take on my care.  One of my friends recommended a wonderful prolife doctor who happened to take our insurance!  He is a maternal fetal specialist and OBGYN who is very prolife.  He was very kind and caring and such a blessing during my difficult pregnancy.  Dr. A would pray with us at the appointments and remind us that Imelda is God's child and only He will decide when to call her home.  Our prayer during the rest of the pregnancy was to have her baptized immediately after birth and to be able to hold her alive in our arms. The next few months of my pregnancy were very, very hard.  All my hopes and dreams of Juliette having a sister to care for and become best friends with melted away.  T...

It's a Girl!

Let's start at the very beginning....it's a very good place to start.  (Kudos if you know which song/musical that is from!)      With 9 boys and 1 girl in the house we were very eager to find out the gender of baby #11.  The odds definitely weren't in our favor.  I made an appointment to find out the baby's gender when I was 13 weeks along.  Gabe and I went to the ultrasound appointment alone.  I wanted to make sure everything was fine with the baby since we hadn't had our first midwife appointment yet, and didn't want the kids to be there if  the baby wasn't moving.       It was so great to see our little baby on the screen jumping around.  However, she refused to open her legs to give us a peek at her gender.  No amount of jumping up and down or drinking cold liquids helped.  I was so disappointed!  We left with an appointment scheduled for the following week hoping baby wou...
